The Acanthus spinosus is a Mediterranean plant with jagged leaves, and was used extensively in a stylised form by the Greeks from the 5th c bce, and later by the Romans. Notably on the Corinthian column capital.
The Acanthus (also known as Bear’s Breeches) is a symbol of birth and immortality.
It’s use as a design motif continued throughout European design right through until the 19th century.
The Acanthus mirror is available in any finish: gilded or painted as shown.
